Gramps is 89.

A little belated, I know.
One week ago my gramps, the infamous gramps, turned 89.
Yep, 89.

We celebrated the weekend before at the Horse Track where as family ranging in ages 10 to 89, we gambled, ate pizza, enjoyed Tanqueray & Tonics and gambled some more.

Now that he's 89, with a renewed driver's license in hand and many admirers at his feet, gramps says he's going to relax.

The Spectacular Cousin Liam

My cousin, Liam invited me to his school play this week. I've been to a few school plays of Liam's, they are always so much fun to watch. He is in them, of course, but also because I have done so much theatre in my life that it's so refreshing to see it done by elementary school kids.

So I went with camera in tow ready to take photo after photo of my favorite ten year old. I went to a daytime performance; there were only a few other family members there and the rest of the audience was comprised of students. Liam attends the same elementary school I did so it's kind of fun to be back there in the middle of the day amongst the student body. Not to mention there is a teacher or two still there from my day.

This production held a little more weight than the past plays because it's Liam's last year in elementary school & his final play there. The play was called, "The Best Little Theatre in Town". It was about a theatre that was in danger of closing due to financial problems. It had all the necessary ingredients for a good and exciting times: lies, love & police chases and it was a musical which added singing and dancing. So much fun.

My cousin, Liam is more like a nephew to me as he's 20 years younger. So I have a little more of a maternal feeling toward him than I do with my other cousins who are all closer to my age. He sang a duet and when he sang it was perfect; great pitch, lovely tone and he sported spectacular stage presence. I was so proud that when the applause came I stood up and shouted, "BRAVO!! BRAVO!!" and then looked back at the entire school population behind me and said, "That's my cousin!! Wasn't he fantastic!!".

Okay, I didn't do that. But I really, really wanted to.

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION (makes me nervous).

In my quest to make a living without an apron I have been doing a little networking with the help of my friend, Beth. One thing that always comes up is the importance of promoting yourself, talking yourself up, pointing out how great your stuff is.
Oh! This is sooo scary for me.
I was raised to be ever so modest & complimentary of others, not myself.
But here goes, modesty is going out the window.

pretty good.

Today I am wearing my magic pair of 7s & they seem to be pretty magic these days. When I purchased them 2 months ago they fit perfect, maybe even a little snug. Within a month I could pull them down without unbuttoning or unzipping them & had to wear them with a belt. Today they were pretty saggy & I had to move over two belt notches to keep them up.

i've lost a little weight.

This is good & I've been working on it. Remember this post?.

There's still a little more work to do, but I've done pretty good.

my dad on TV.

Last night the TV was on. I wasn't really watching, it was just on. Ever do this? Just to have a little extra noise when your home alone? I find myself doing this a lot when Handsome Randy is on the road.

So last night. The TV was on, I was doing something with itunes & not paying attention to the the TV at all. Then out of the corner of my eye I notice a man on TV who looks a lot like my dad. I look up & pay attention. It is my dad.

A kind of snarky true crime program called Suburban Secrets committed an episode around a case my dad and his team solved a couple of years ago. I wasn't totally surprised, this case received a lot of media attention & even landed my dad a little cameo on America's Most Wanted.

So there he was. On my television, walking across the screen leading a guy in handcuffs, as I sat on my sofa on a Saturday night.

gatos.

<----Cyrus

I never write about my cats.
me, who has had cats my entire life, has never posted anything more than a sentence (if that) about my cats, Asha & Cyrus.

There is a blog, Minnesota Meow and it sort of made me feel as though I was a crappy cat owner as I realized I had not once blogged about my cats. so, I'm going to remedy this and blog about all of them. sorry to bore you, but I must...here goes.

my earliest memory ever is standing in the kitchen of a neighbor about 4 doors down from my childhood home. I'm admiring a newly acquired orange and white kitten. Then flash to my dad scolding me in my bedroom for running off without telling him. I couldn't have been three yet; he must have been terrified. He has no memory of this incident, but it is crystal clear for me. I can still see that kitten.

We always have had cats. For a long time they were always all black (Shadow, Rainbow & Rascall) or all white (Whitey & Popcorn). But then Popcorn had kittens and we kept one, Pudding, who was black and white. This was during my 1st grade year. Pudding was the best cat ever and he lived to be about 10. One night he went outside and never came back. This is what cats do when they die, I'm told, they just go away to be alone. It's very private for them.

Popcorn disappeared about a year after Pudding's litter was born. We acquired Stevie shortly thereafter to fill the void. She was rescued from a 2nd grade classmate of mine who claimed her stepdad hated cats & threw Stevie down the stairs when she acted like a cat. Stevie lived to be about 20, she only died about 2 years ago. She was a petite little tabby who was an expert hunter & had many litters of kittens through the years (contributing nicely to the overpopulation of cats and homeless pets problem), including Pom Pom who was born when I was about 8.

Pom Pom was super skittish. When he was only a few months old he was locked in neighbors garage for a week never to be the same. He lived to be about 18. This was sort of torturous for my mother who was not all that fond of Pom Pom. In his later years he developed a terrible habit of peeing in her closet thus causing his popularity to wane. When I came home from college, I brought Pom Pom to the vet to be put down (it's hard to give away a cat who pees inappropriately). He was quite healthy, he just couldn't shake the habit of peeing in my mother's closet. The vet (who was definition of The Crazy Cat Lady) was appalled and refused to put down a cat of such "strong & healthy stock", she then lectured me for not taking him in as he was originally my cat. I agreed, but explained that I had acquired two cats of my own in my adulthood and resided in a 500 square foot studio apartment. Crazy Cat Lady saw none of this and sent me on my way with Pom Pom who was a little freaked out, but alive, and me trying to find the words to share with my mother. Pom Pom disappeared about 2 years later.

I found Asha at the Humane Society in Tacoma, Wa in 2000 while I was in college. She came with the name "Ghosty" and was about 6 months old. Her first night with me she climbed beneath the covers and laid on her back with her head on the pillow. Asha---->

Cyrus came into the picture shortly after I moved back to Minneapolis in 2001. I needed company for Asha so I headed to the Minnesota Valley Humane Society. He was pretty young (3 months) and quite shy.

My planned companionship for the two cats works well. Though Asha kicks Cyrus' ass on a regular basis, she spends more time grooming him and napping with him. And I couldn't imagine our house without them.

Meet Wyatt.

My cousin, Heather gave birth to a healthy baby boy on Friday afternoon. Wyatt Robert Hanson came in at 6lbs & 8oz. His arrival has been much anticipated in my family as our youngest member is 17!

What a sweet little baby he is, I can't wait to get to know him more!
